Bio
To date Kirk has been studying mathematical patterns and sequences found in nature, and is producing sculptural interpretations of those patterns in an attempt to articulate and convey his understanding of them. Kirk is very interested in the complex polar relationship that exists between science and nature; the man-made construct intended to define and quantify with great precision, and the natural world that so little is known about where everything seems to happen at random. Kirk uses geometry, mathematical patterns and sequences, aggregations, and fractals as elemental building blocks in his work to demonstrate his understanding of the relationship between science and nature. He creates articulated forms that display how logical mathematically derived patterns can produce complex organic natural forms. Kirk's approach to his work is much like that of a scientist; creating systems of variables that can be fixed or manipulated in a variety of combinations. The sculptural output is the result of controlled experimentation, and despite the fact that the artistic process is very controlled, the final outcome can not always be precisely predicted.
